Join us for a hands-on workshop where you'll learn the art and science of mushroom log inoculation. This session will highlight the use of plug and sawdust spawn cloned and grown by our dedicated members. Participants will engage in every step of the process and gain the knowledge to cultivate their own edible or medicinal mushrooms.
What You’ll Do:
Participate in the entire inoculation process using tools such as drills, mallets, and wax sealers.
Learn about wood selection, spawn handling, and log preparation, focusing on native reishi and turkey tail mushrooms, which are ideal for decomposing tree limbs while reducing wildfire fuel.
Take home your inoculated log (if you bring your own hardwood log).
Enjoy delicious food and drinks available for purchase at Vista.
Bring Your Own Hardwood Log:
If you'd like to grow mushrooms at home, bring a hardwood log (oak, sycamore, pecan, or mesquite) measuring 3”-7” in diameter and 2-3 feet in length. Conifers like cedar, pine, or juniper won’t work for this purpose.
Workshop Highlights:
Spawn Types: Hands-on use of plug spawn (hardwood dowels) and insights into sawdust spawn used in past experiments.
Techniques for Success: Learn inoculation, sealing, storage, and care to ensure your mushrooms thrive.
Environmental Impact: Contribute to ecological restoration by upcycling tree limbs downed in winter storms.
What to Bring:
Closed-toe shoes
Water
A cordless drill with a charged battery and 5/16” drill bit (spade or twist bit works)
Mallet or hammer (rubber or wooden mallet preferred)
A trash bag for transporting your log (if needed)
Note: We’ll have some tools available to borrow.
FAQs:
How long will it take my log to fruit, and how long will it last?
Your log should begin fruiting within 5-8 months. Logs typically fruit for about one year per inch of diameter (3-7 years) and may yield multiple harvests each season.
What environment do I need to grow my logs successfully?
Logs thrive in shady areas with good air circulation and a water source. Ideal locations include under trees, in gardens, or even on apartment balconies. We’ll share tips during the workshop to optimize your log’s conditions.
Will I need a large vehicle to transport my log home?
Not necessarily! Logs are compact and easy to transport. Bringing a trash bag can help keep your car clean.
Why Join Us?
This workshop is an excellent opportunity to connect with sustainable practices, enhance your gardening skills, and grow your own food or medicine. Plus, you'll learn how to make use of local resources while supporting a healthier ecosystem.
We can’t wait to see you there!
