Join us a Inks Lake State Park to look our new state mushroom Texas Star Mushroom also known as the Devil’s Cigar. Chorioactis geaster. It is unique to our state and is only found in a few other geographic locations - Japan and Taiwan. The mushroom hisses when at opens and spreads its spore. Watch Video. You may recognize the mushroom because it is part of our logo.
This hike will be approximately 1.5-2 miles and depending on how long we stop at each mushroom, could possibly take up to 3 hours. While over-all this hike is rated "easy", there are moderate sections that require a little bit of climbing or maneuvering, and might not be suitable for everyone. Strollers, scooters, crutches, and wheel-chairs will not be able to complete this route.
This hike will be rain or shine so plan on bringing appropriate clothing and/or umbrellas if necessary. Good, no slip hiking boots are a MUST, especially if the weather calls for rain. Unfortunately the rocks get really slippery when wet. Since this is in January, if there is any ice or other inclement weather the hike will be cancelled.
This is a registration-only event and will be capped at the first 50 participants (infants included). The Day-Use fees to enter the Park are $7/adult for everyone 13 and older. Children 12 and younger are free. If you register for a certain number of people and bring extra, they will not be permitted on the hike. All ages are welcome but infants and toddlers will need to be carried and there are some spots where this will be challenging.
There is no extra cost for this hike but valid Day-Use Passes are required for all adults 13 and over. Reserving your Day-Use Pass in advance is recommended especially on busy weekends and Holidays. Registering for the hike itself does not guarantee your Day-Pass. If we are sold out and you don't have one purchased, you will not be able to enter the Park.
Please arrive at least 15-30 minutes before the scheduled activity start time. Even if you pre-purchase your Day-Use Pass online, you will still need to go into the Headquarters building to check in.
Parking might not be available directly at Devil's Waterhole so plan on possibly parking in an overflow parking spot and walking to the trailhead. Carpooling is encouraged when possible.
