Kick off the new year with us for a first day hike and hunt for our new state mushroom the Devil’s Cigar or Texas Star. Chorioactis geaster is unique to our state and is only found in a few other geographic locations - Japan and Taiwan. Scientists are perplexed as to why it is so geographically distributed and separated genetically by 18 million years. The mushroom hisses when at opens and spreads its spore. Watch Video

Angel Schatz radiates passion for understanding the ecosystem of central Texas and making mycology education accessible to anyone who shares interest. She is also a member of leadership team of Austin Organic Gardeners; harmonizing vegetable gardening and mushroom growing, particularly by using recycled mushroom blocks.
