Waxy Caps are some of the most eye-catching and colorful mushrooms found around the world, yet there remain foundational gaps in our understanding of this fungal family. As availability of modern molecular technology increases, the taxonomic standing of many groups within Hygrophoraceae has fluctuated, with new mysteries arising as soon as one is solved. Lauren Ré will discuss community science contributions that have helped illuminate the breadth of regional, national and international diversity of Waxy Caps. She will also cover their ecology, importance in conservation and will share profiles of several iconic species.
Lauren Ré grew up in the busy suburbs outside of New York City before moving to Olympia, Washington where she earned her Bachelor's of Science at The Evergreen State College. After founding a mycology club on campus, she went on to become the Program Chair and Chief Mycologist for the NAMA-affiliated South Sound Mushroom Club. Lauren is an active participant of the Fungal Diversity Survey, co-leading the West Coast Rare Fungi Challenge and submitting specimens through several local projects. Lauren is interested in fungal ecology, taxonomy, and phylogeny, especially within the Waxy Cap family, Hygrophoraceae. She is passionate about education and bringing greater awareness and understanding of fungal biodiversity.
