  • Bastrop Botanical Gardens (map)

Date: Saturday, November 17, 2022

Time: 11 am - 1 pm

Location: Bastrop Botanical Gardens

Cost: $5 Donation for blocks

Join us for a fun low tech workshop on how to grow mushrooms from recycled Mushroom Mycelium blocks. Bring your own container (see examples below) and we will supply the rest. This is a donation based event, with minimum of $5 per block donation requested.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This workshop will give you the practical knowledge to learn how to use recycled mushroom blocks to build healthy soil, sequester carbon, increase water retention, feed the soil web, your plants and eventually you!

This workshop will cover the basic biology of Mushrooms and then we will share low-cost, low-tech ways to recycle Mushroom blocks back into the soil with examples of working projects. Also, how to grow delicious Vitamin D filled culinary mushrooms!

These basic techniques require no special equipment or electricity, and can all be done outdoors using organic materials found on most farms and gardens. Let’s build healthy soil together! Let's Get the Fungus Among Us!

Examples of containers

planter pot, 5 gallon bucket, laundry basket, milk crate, or crate for vegetables, wire mesh container like a bird house, strawberry pot. Any container with holes in it will work. Do not buy anything new, there are many ways to recycle and use these materials. If your container doesn’t have holes in the side, use a drill with a 1“ bit to drill holes in a diamond pattern 4” apart on the sides of the bucket. DO NOT drill holes on the bottom. If there are already holes on the bottom, cover them with cardboard.
