Lichens! Lichens! Lichens!
Find out what they are and why they are so darn cool during this fabulous talk by Cat Cort!
Description:
While you may have noticed the slow-growing, colorful patches of lichen on rocks and trees during your mushroom hunts, have you ever wondered how they got there and what they're doing? Join us to learn about the amazing forms and functions of lichens and how they persist on every continent on Earth! We will discuss the biology of the lichen "symbiosis", their global distribution, and what we know (and don't know) about lichen biodiversity. We hope you will leave with a newfound appreciation and love for these incredible "micro-ecosystems" and how they contribute to life as we know it.
About the presenter:
Cat Cort is a mycologist and ecologist working towards her Ph.D at the University of Texas at El Paso. She is broadly interested in dryland ecosystems and the biodiversity of soil microbes. Her research focuses on understanding the connections between plants, fungi, and biological soil crusts in the Northern Chihuahuan desert. She is passionate about engaging underrepresented groups in STEM and building science outreach and mentorship opportunities locally as coordinator of the 500 Women Scientists El Paso Pod. Cat is excited to connect and collaborate through the many great networks of fungal research in the Southwestern U.S. and beyond.
