Fungi, Art, and the "War on Drugs" Part II
By Angel S. (@forage.atx)
This talk will be about fungi use in art and will focus on the war on drugs which as we know is really a war on nature, a tool of colonialism that is used to oppress indigenous people and create a permanent under-caste. Sacred mushrooms were portrayed in early art and used by people all over the globe to commune and find harmony with the planet. As the crusades, directed by the Roman Catholic Church continued and western colonization brought the inquisition to Central and South America, materialism was forced upon native people.
We will continue through the war on drugs into the '60s and '70s and in the 21st century and look at how mushrooms are used in contemporary art, movies, video games and more. We will see how the spiritual was replaced with the material and the collective consciousness was replaced with individualism and art as a commodity grew out of this paradigm. We will also see how sacred mushrooms are portrayed subversively as a rebellion against the ruling class.
