More about the Creators:

STEPHEN AXFORD –

FUNGI PHOTOGRAPHER AND TIME-LAPSE VIDEOGRAPHER – AMBASSADOR FOR SONY AUSTRALIA

Stephen Axford has an international reputation as a specialist in macro fungi photography. He also has a unique expertise in time-lapse photography of fungi. The beauty and scientific accuracy of Stephen’s fungi photography has captivated national and international media, fungi experts and the general public, with a following that stretches from Patagonia to Vladivostok.

He even has a mushroom recently documented in China named after him … Panaeolus Axfordii.

Over the past 10 years Stephen has taken photographs in some of the most remote forests on the planet.

His photographs have appeared on international websites and in international books and magazines, including: Nat Geo Magazine in Spain/Portugal, Geo Magazine in Germany, Roots Magazine in Holland, the 2014 International Union for the Conservation of Nature ‘Red List of Threatened Species’, The Australian Conservation Foundation 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 calendars, the ‘The Magic of Mushrooms’ Guardian Observer [UK], Daily Mail UK, China Geography and Civilization Magazines, Newton Magazine in Japan ‘Fungi special’ Sciences et Avenir  magazine in France.

Stephen’s fungi time-lapses have featured in award-winning science documentaries, including BBC Planet Earth 2, The Kingdom: how fungi made the world, Fantastic Fungi, Our Planet, Hostile Planet and Magical World of Oz.

They are also included in many documentaries he has made with his life partner and filmmaker, Catherine Marciniak, including “Planet Fungi – north east India” a fun fungi safari in the eastern Himalayas, soon to be released on streaming platforms across the world.

An important part of Stephen and Catherine’s myco-media work is their international collaborations with universities, research facilities and fungi organisations where they document fungi in forests around the world and record the ethnomycology of the people who live on the forest fringe in these remote regions.

At the invitation of the Kunming Institute of Botany part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Stephen and Catherine have documented the fungi in some of China’s tropical and temperate rainforests. Stephen’s photographs have subsequently been used to illustrate comprehensive field guides of fungi in Yunnan. This myco-media team have also collaborated with the Fungi Foundation of Chile, Balipara Foundation in India, BELT’s Vertical University in Nepal and Mountain Futures in Myanmar.

For Stephen and Catherine international partnerships are a significant way to share the story of fungi, the inspiring work of mycologists around the world and the importance of fungi to life on the planet.

 CATHERINE MARCINIAK -

DIRECTOR, WRITER, EDITOR AND CINEMATOGRAPHER

Catherine is a senior features reporter at ABC North Coast. She joined the local bureau of Australia's public broadcaster after a successful international career as a documentary director and cinematographer.

"Fungi is a huge obsession that has changed our lives. We love the forms, colours and the endlessly fascinating diversity of fungi. We love being in the forest. And, we love that we are helping to document one of the largest kingdoms of life on the planet. This is a new frontier of scientific discovery."

Catherine’s television credits include over 40 hours of long form documentaries, including ‘Steel City’, ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’, the ‘Life Series - Life At 1’ and ‘Life At 3’, 'Hospital - an unhealthy business', ‘Leagueability’, ‘Babe in the reeds’ and 'Beyond the Royal Veil'.
